Description:
Utilizing traditional skills in hand-building and wheel-throwing, students are encouraged to develop an awareness of three dimensional form and its expressive potential. Through group critique and discussion, students are also encouraged to verbalize their observations and to develop an expanded aesthetic awareness.

Topics Covered: Hand-building (coil, pinch and slab technique), wheel-throwing (plates, bowls and cylinders), vocabulary and contemporary issues in ceramics.

Expectations: The course is designed to familiarize the student with the medium of clay and encourage its use as a means of exploring individual expression. Students should also develop greater aesthetic awareness through group critique and informal studio discussion.

Studio: Nine potter's wheels, two large (new) electric kilns, ware carts, clay mixer, pug-mill, four large work tables, spray booth, raku kiln, individual storage units for every student.
