Description:  Techniques of additive and subtractive sculpture, including techniques of clay modeling, stone carving, paper mache, wood carving, and cement sculpture, are available and taught as time and interest permit. All students do preliminary studies in clay using both techniques. These studies include an abstract design created with subtractive techniques, a sculpture based on a small natural object found outdoors, and several short and one long figure study.

In all studies elements of three dimensional design are emphasized. Depending on the interest of the student, he may continue to more advanced work in clay, learn techniques of carving in wood or stone, learn techniques of additive sculpture in papier mache (large work) or cement. Students are taught the proper use and care of clay and carving tools.

Expectations:  It is expected that each student will learn the techniques necessary for them to successfully express himself in the media of sculpture, that he will learn the basic principles of three-dimensional design, that he will perceive the world more completely for having had to work, three dimensionally and that he will have a greater and more complete appreciation for the three-dimensional work of other artists.
